I   NIFAA.org to launch state-by state Bulletin Board. We're so often asked, "Is a
NIFAA workshop planned for our area?" Alas, the answer is nearly always, "no."
We cannot afford to travel on our own dime. You'll be able to post your interest by
state--and make it happen--by networking with others, pooling your resources,
and sharing tasks. Write us at www.nifaa.org, and we'll enter your post under your
state's heading. NIFAA Board will appear in the fall. If you email your query earlier
to info@nifaa.org, we'll be sure to post it when the board is launched.

II   IRS changes reporting requirements for (c)(3)charities and (c)(4) political
  lobbying organizations, page 210 of
"GET POLITICAL FOR ANIMALS."
Compliance with IRS's reporting requirements is essential. Email us at info@nifaa.org,
and we'll send you the revised page 210.

III   NIFAA's friends move up in the world:

Law Prof Cass Sunstein appointed US "regulatory czar" by President Obama, now
faces Senate confirmation. NIFAA interviewed Sunstein for "GET POLITICAL..."
He's quoted on the first page of Chapter 1.

John Phillips has expanded League of Humane Voters of New York City PAC to
the state-wide New York League of Humane Voters. Our phone conversations are
  regularly interrupted by prominent lawmakers.

Jeff Markley of Oregon elected US Senator. We interviewed Markley when he was
"merely" Oregon's House Minority Leader. He's quoted on page 75.

IV   Great appreciation to the ASPCA for its generous grant to NIFAA. There's no
way we can thank the "A" enough or be grateful enough, for its generous financial
support--and its belief in NIFAA's mission. We sorely needed this help, and the A
  listened and responded.

NIFAA has taken a major financial hit in these hard times. Can you help? Our
resources are not nearly adequate for our strategic plan to bring NIFAA's
expertise to activists around the US. Yes! Your donation is tax-deductible. We give
you hearty thanks in advance. See www.nifaa.org/donate.html to donate online. Or
make your check payable to "CCHE/NIFAA" and mail to NIFAA, c/o Lewin, 6 Long
Hill Farm, Guilford, CT 06437-1866. Consider joining other automatic on-line
monthly donors of any amount of $5 or more. You can cancel anytime.

V   While they last. NIFAA has a limited number of new, shrink-wrapped "GET
POLITICAL FOR ANIMALS" for only $25 including US shipping. We've been forced
to raise the standard price to $34 including shipping. The $25 copies don't include
the revised page 210 (which we'll include in each copy or the updated titles for
NIFAA's friends in Item III above and have minor typos.

VII   Maryland Votes for Animals Carolyn Kilborne of Annapolis and a cadre of
other committed rights and rescue activists from around the state have launched
this new Political Action Committee. The group credits "GET POLITICAL..." for
giving them the understanding of how our movement must pursue laws and
enforcement and a step-by-step program to follow. July 12 they hosted NIFAA's
Julie Lewin for a day-long training. Carolyn said: "She was just the spark we
needed to move our group forward, and we've adopted Julie's call to political
action as our own: 'Don't moan, organize!' Her training session was an eye-opener
and inspirational. We were so engaged about the influence our PAC can have on
MD animal protection laws, we didn't want to stop for lunch! We peppered her
with questions and hung on her every word.

Starting in October, NIFAA NEWS will feature a regular how-to-column from Carolyn.
Follow MFVA's progress, tips, problems and their resolutions, activities, and experiences.

Carolyn's update August 6: Internal conflicts
"We are off to a running start thanks to the very detailed instructions in GET
POLITICAL. We call it our 'bible' because it's so comprehensive and spot-on,
covering every detail we need to develop political muscle. We've also found that it
precludes the internal conflicts so common with animal groups; when we
disagree, we just refer to our 'bible' to find the answer and then move ahead!"

Contact Carolyn@voteanimals.org if you're an MD advocate or know others.

VIII   Prominent animal rights activist lawmaker Rep. Maryanne Hornish concludes
  her first legislative session.
We told you last November that Annie beat an 18-year
entrenched anti-animal incumbent. Our animal rights and vegan activist friend and
colleague has concluded her first session as a State Representative in
Connecticut. Seeing her in action was astonishing--this was no timid
freshwoman. She generously credits GET POLITICAL for being a major help.
*NIFAA NEWS plans a Q & A with her in October. Do you know of other animal
activists who have been elected a state, county, city, or town lammaker, or is she
the first? Let us know at info@nifaa.org.

1  Prominent vegan/rescue activist wins election to statehouse with our book, ”GET POLITICAL FOR ANIMALS AND WIN THE LAWS THEY NEED: Why and How to Launch a Voting Bloc for Animals in Your Town, City, County and State—and the simple steps it takes to do it.”

Not only did the Humane Society’s presidential candidate win! The Compassionate Living Project’s Annie Hornish
ousted an 18-year anti-animal incumbent state representative in Connecticut. Annie, my long-time animal rights colleague,
and husband Neil, praise
“GET POLITICAL FOR ANIMALS” as inspiration and guide. I served as a campaign consultant.
Look forward to a report on her experience (she’s kinda busy now!) Annie is the first publicly-known, highly visible
animal rights activist to win a statehouse seat—I think. Let NIFAA know if there are others!

2  What we must learn from the November 4 election.  With such increased interest and excitement in politics and lawmaking, the time to organize politically for animals is NOW!

Obama’s winning strategy exactly followed our power axioms.

  • First and foremost: Power in the lawmaking arena comes from directly mobilizing voters from the ground up.
  • Second: Obama’s campaign followed page 34: “The easiest way to wield political power is to ask people to vote
who traditionally aren’t asked…give them a reason to vote.”
  • Third: Register new voters who are favorable to the cause. Obama won many areas with a grassroots strategy
of bringing new voters and usual stay-at-homes to the polls!
Do you doubt that there are many untapped voters
whose concern for animals would motivate them to vote for your endorsed candidate?
  • Fourth: Aggressively “get out the vote;” that is, contact your group’s favorable voters the few days before
the election to urge them to get to the polls.

NIFAA’s book and workshops explain exactly how activists can do so easily and win unprecedented power for animals
in their towns, cities, counties and states. And how, at the town, city, county levels they can do so while holding
full-time jobs.

We must realize that the most important thing to a lawmaker is to be re-elected—that the merits are low on the list
of factors that determine the fate of substantive legislation.
A lawmakers’ fear that a political group would condemn
his/her voting record on its issue, endorse the lawmaker’s opponent come the next election, and turn out voters
for the lawmaker’s opponent are the most important factors that determine how the lawmaker votes on a
piece of legislation.

3  Activists launch political groups for animals in their Towns, Cities, Counties and States
—our book as inspiration and blueprint

Your next NIFAA News will feature Interviews with the leaders of these new groups. In Ohio, Maryland, Minnesota,
New York, Connecticut and other states,
“GET POLITICAL FOR ANIMALS” is achieving its mission: Convincing
advocates that pursuing laws through political groups that endorse candidates is a mandatory component of our advocacy
(as it is for every other issue group)—and teaching them how to do it. We keep hearing from new political groups formed
as a result of NIFAA but learn of some only accidentally.  LET US KNOW!
KEEP IN TOUCH!

4  NIFAA launches new website www.nifaa.org. Please look! We worked hard and are still working on a list
of substantive improvements. Reviews, raves, and testimonials for
“GET POLITICAL FOR ANIMALS and our workshops
and presentations continue to pour in. Find these and more on www.nifaa.org.

5  Bill Clinton quotes NIFAA on Election Day (!?)

Explaining Barack Obama’s historic victory on MSNBC, I heard Clinton say: “Power comes from the ground up.”
Has he read our book?  Here’s Chapter 1’s top “political axiom”: “Organize politically at the grassroots level.
Power in the lawmaking arena comes only from the ground up. Think big for the animals, but from the ground up.”
